Sandy Ptak of Anchorage Alaska is the new 2008-09 Miss Czech Slovak United States. Sandy is the daughter of Peter and Olga Ptak. She is will be a senior in the fall at Portland State University, double majoring in Business Management and Marketing. Sandy was an outstanding candidate for the pageant. She will be a great ambassador for the Czech and Slovak communities of the USA. Sandy not only was the overall title, she was the Grand Talent Winner, Miss Congeniality and won the Oratory Award. For Sandy’s talent she sang, in Czech, “I Drove All Night” by Celine Dion. Sandy is a first generation American. She is fluent in Czech, English and intermediate Spanish. In her spare time she enjoys horseback riding, reading about history and traveling. Being crowned Miss Czech-Slovak US was a wonderful addition to the already amazing weekend I had in Wilber, NE.  It was the first time I had ever been to a Czech festival in the US and I had no idea that there were so many people my age genuinely interested in preserving and celebrating my culture.  I am honored to be Miss Czech-Slovak United States and will continue to promote the pageant, festival, and my culture throughout the United States as well as Czech-Republic.

August

I spent most of this month answering hundreds of emails and planning for my year to come.  The first two weeks felt like Sunday night in Wilber, and the rest of the month the idea that I was Queen this year slowly sunk in.  I would like to again thank everyone that went to support Czech Days and the pageant.  Nebraska was so welcoming and I appreciate all the support from the people I met that weekend.  And yes, I was a bit hot, but I didn’t want everyone to know!

September

-September suddenly became a lot busier than I had anticipated.  I was still planning appearances and emailing ideas and responses daily. 

-17^th I flew back to Alaska, my home state which I represented in Nebraska, and felt like a busy celebrity.  I spent six hours recording a Polka/Waltz CD in Czech that will be on sale in late October as a fundraiser for my travel budget.  My vocal coach is Peggy Monoghan of Arctic Siren Records.  www.arcticsiren.com

-19^th I attended a Polka Mass at St. Patrick’s Parish, which was a Catholic mass, I read a reading from the “big book” and there was a Polka dance afterwards.

-26^th was the quarterly Czech-Alaska Society Polka Party where I showcased pictures from Nebraska, my trophies and crowns.  I also MC these events regularly, and performed a few polkas as well.

-27^th I attended and sang Polkas and Waltzes at the Alaska World Affairs Council Ball and Banquet. 

-28^th flew back to Portland, Oregon where school started back up on the 30^th.

October

-1^st  Washington Policy Center dinner.  I was invited to sing the Czech National Anthem for honorary guests, Vaclav Klaus, Czech President, and Czech Ambassador, Peter Kolar!  www.washingtonpolicy.org  I sat at the table with his staff and met the U.S. Secret Service, all of whom were generous and were easy to share a few laughs with.

-4^th Fly to Oklahoma for the Yukon Czech Festival.  Great festival, and I spent much of my time with the former Nebraska Queen, Shandra Korbelik, 1^st Runner Up Christy Kessler, and the current New Jersey Queen, Brianna Tichy.  I was also privileged to watch the crowning ceremony of the new royalty and meet the new Oklahoma Queen.

-5^th Drive to York, Nebraska for Czechfest.  Thank you for your donations and letting me entertain!  I also met the new Nebraska Queen this weekend, and the dudy (Czech Bagpipes) were great!  Thank you to the Miller Family (my Wilber Little Sister’s family) for yet another great time in Nebraska!

6th- Portland Oregon Czech Society invited me for their anual picknick.   I had nice welcome, was able to tell them about my Miss Czech-Slovak US pageant experience.  Oregon is working on having their representative in 2009 for next Miss Czech-Slovak US
